The draw of the Champions 25/26: an unequal path for the five Spanish teams

The Champions League 2025-26 draw has been one of the most anticipated in recent years. The renewed 36-team league system definitively replaces the traditional group stage and promises a rollercoaster of emotions. Each club will play eight matches, four at home and four away, against opponents from different pots, with the guarantee of avoiding repeated clashes against clubs from the same country.

For Spain, the event was historic: five teams in contention —Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal, and Athletic Club—, a milestone that demonstrates LaLiga’s strength on the European stage.

Execution of the draw and balance of the pots

The pots, built according to UEFA’s coefficient, generated a mix of opponents of all kinds: established giants, historic sides in reconstruction, and debutants full of hope. The new format aims to deliver more attractive matches, reduce predictable fixtures, and, ultimately, keep the competition alive from start to finish.

The final of the 2025/26 Champions League will be played at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.

Real Madrid: high-voltage calendar

Real Madrid will face at the Bernabéu heavyweights like Manchester City and Juventus, plus Marseille and Monaco. Away from home, they’ll visit Anfield to meet Liverpool, as well as Lisbon (Benfica), Piraeus (Olympiacos), and a long trip to Kazakhstan to take on Kairat Almaty.

It’s undoubtedly a calendar of extreme difficulty, although with the advantage of welcoming the toughest rivals at home. The white side will need to manage the intensity of every round without neglecting LaLiga.

Barcelona: a friendly Champions draw

FC Barcelona was one of the big winners of the draw. At Camp Nou they’ll host PSG, perhaps their toughest test, along with Eintracht Frankfurt, Olympiacos, and Copenhagen. Away from home, they’ll face Chelsea, Brugge, Slavia Prague, and Newcastle.

The Blaugrana, with a relatively balanced calendar, avoid extreme trips and chains of maximum-demand opponents. It’s a golden chance to build confidence and secure a direct place in the final stages.

Atlético de Madrid: a steep path

Atlético de Madrid will have to sweat for every point. At the Metropolitano they’ll meet Inter Milan, Frankfurt, Bodø/Glimt, and Union Saint-Gilloise, rivals of varying strength but all competitive. Away, the challenge rises with a fearsome trio: Liverpool, Arsenal, and PSV, plus a tough trip to Istanbul to face Galatasaray.

For Simeone’s men, this calendar represents a true Everest. Consistency will be key if they want to avoid the risk of the play-off.

Villarreal: the trial by fire

Villarreal faces one of the harshest calendars. At La Cerámica they’ll host Manchester City, Juventus, Ajax, and Copenhagen, while away they’ll need to contend with Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham, and Pafos.

There’s no doubt the “Yellow Submarine” will need to border on perfection to survive this phase. Still, pressure could become motivation and give them a competitive edge.

Athletic Club: return with maximum demands

Athletic Club returns to the Champions full of excitement, but the calendar gives no respite. At San Mamés they’ll receive PSG, Arsenal, Sporting Lisbon, and Qarabag, while their trips will take them to Dortmund, Bergamo to face Atalanta, Prague against Slavia, and Newcastle in England.

A menu packed with high-level rivals that will test the Basque fighting spirit. For Athletic, advancing past this stage would already be a remarkable achievement.

Comparing levels of difficulty

Looking at the schedules, the contrasts are clear:

  • Barcelona is, on paper, the most favored, with mid-level opponents and manageable trips.
  • Villarreal and Athletic are among the most punished, facing tough fixtures and long journeys.
  • Atlético de Madrid also ranks high in difficulty, with several giants from the Premier League and Serie A on their list.
  • Real Madrid, though hosting the “big guns” at home, still faces a marathon-like Champions calendar full of risks.

In this new format, where finishing in the top eight avoids the play-offs, every detail matters: from goal difference to fatigue management.

Rodri, last season’s Ballon d’Or winner, returns after his serious injury and will be aiming to conquer the Champions League.

Strategic implications

The single-league system promises greater balance. The points threshold to make the top 8 will be high, and teams that don’t reach it will have to go through a dangerous play-off against clubs ranked between 9th and 24th. That’s why picking up points every round and not underestimating theoretically weaker rivals is crucial.

Connection with SIA Academy

The competitive environment of this Champions has an interesting parallel with the philosophy of SIA Academy, the high-performance academy in Spain’s Valencian Community. There, young footballers learn that facing tough opponents is part of growth. Just like in Europe, where one mistake can be costly, in an elite academy the focus is on mental preparation, opponent analysis, and adaptability to different playing styles.

The Champions demands consistency, and that’s the same mentality a player develops during training if he dreams of breaking into the professional elite.

ANUAL PROGRAMME

The Champions League 2025-26 draw has made it clear that Spanish teams will face very different journeys. While Barcelona can look to the future with optimism, Real Madrid, Atlético, Villarreal, and Athletic must brace themselves for battles of the highest level.

In this new league-style format, every match counts and there’s no margin for mistakes. Spain once again presents five representatives with the quality to compete, but the road will not be the same for all. The show, however, is guaranteed, and as in any great sporting challenge, only the best-prepared will make it all the way.
