How to identify talent beyond technical skills in football

When it comes to identifying future top-level footballers, attention is often focused on individual technique. A good first touch, an eye-catching dribble or a powerful shot usually attracts the attention of coaches and scouts very quickly. However, talent goes far beyond those visible actions and, in many cases, the qualities that truly make the difference are much harder to detect.

Focusing only on technical quality can lead to incomplete evaluations. Modern football demands players who can understand the game, adapt to different scenarios and respond with personality in every competitive situation.

At SIA Academy, we believe that effective player assessment must consider every dimension of a footballer. Our objective is not only to identify who performs best today, but also who possesses the qualities needed to continue developing in the future.

Attitude reveals much more than a spectacular play

During a trial, it is easy to remember a brilliant piece of skill, but coaches also pay close attention to everything that happens between one action and the next. The way a player responds to feedback, encourages teammates or maintains intensity when things are not going well provides extremely valuable information.

Talent is also reflected in a player’s willingness to learn. A footballer who accepts guidance, maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates commitment often has far greater potential for improvement than someone with stronger technical qualities but little ability to adapt.

Consistency and discipline are qualities that help build successful football careers.

“We are always looking for players who want to learn every day. Attitude is a quality that never goes unnoticed,” says José Luis, coach at the academy.

Maintaining a positive attitude will help us perform consistently.

Talent is also reflected in game intelligence

Many footballers stand out because they execute actions well when in possession, but only a few are capable of anticipating what will happen a few seconds later. That ability to read the game is one of the clearest indicators of talent.

A player who understands space, recognises numerical advantages and consistently makes good decisions improves the team’s overall performance, even without constantly being involved in the play.

At SIA Academy, we dedicate an important part of our methodology to developing tactical understanding. We want our players to understand why they make every movement and how their decisions influence the team’s overall performance.

Off-the-ball behaviour also deserves attention

One of the most common mistakes during player assessment is focusing only on what a footballer does when directly involved in the action. In reality, a large part of football is played without the ball.

Positioning, movement, pressing, defensive cover and communication reveal each player’s understanding of the game.

Talent also appears in those small details that often go unnoticed by those who only focus on the final action.

During our training sessions, we constantly analyse collective behaviour because we believe that every footballer must contribute both in possession and while working to recover the ball.

Adaptability accelerates development

Not every player reacts in the same way when circumstances change. Some maintain a high level regardless of the tactical system, playing position or quality of the opposition. This flexibility is an increasingly valuable quality in modern football.

Talent is not simply about mastering familiar situations, but about finding solutions when unexpected challenges arise.

“We pay close attention to how a player responds when taken out of their comfort zone. That is where we discover qualities that a conventional trial does not always reveal,” explains José Luis.

At SIA Academy, we design varied training exercises to observe how our players deal with new challenges and how quickly they apply the concepts introduced during each session.

Adapting to different situations is essential for improving as a footballer.

Environment influences development

Every footballer arrives with a different background. Previous experience, competitive level, family support and available opportunities all influence a player’s development.

For this reason, identifying talent requires understanding each player’s context and avoiding rushed conclusions. Some footballers simply need time to adapt before showing everything they are capable of.

Evaluating progression provides far more valuable information than relying solely on a first impression.

Our methodology is based on continuous observation, allowing us to understand each player’s development and provide the tools they need to keep improving.

A complete vision of the future player

Identifying talent means looking beyond an impressive dribble or a powerful shot. Tactical intelligence, attitude, adaptability, mental strength and daily commitment are all factors that shape a footballer’s long-term development.

At SIA Academy, we believe that developing players means understanding their full potential, not just their current technical abilities. That is why we are committed to a comprehensive evaluation process that allows us to identify talent in all its dimensions and support every footballer throughout their journey of continuous development.
