Learn about Villarreal CF, a participant in a tournament organized by SIA Academy
Think you know your team’s history? Are you a Villarreal fan and still not hooked on their women’s section? Today is the time to start. In this post you can find out about the Castellón club from its beginnings to the present day.
Columbus Day is also the day on which the first women’s tournament against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was held, organized by SIA Academy. This festive day brought together hundreds of people who enjoyed four matches played by the teams: Valencia, Villarreal, Levante and SIA Massanassa CF. The final was disputed between the teams from Valencia and Levante and the result was 1-0 for the team from Orriols, winners of the tournament.
History of Villarreal
Villarreal is a city because it has just over 51,000 inhabitants. In this town of Castellón, Villarreal CF was born on March 10, 1947, and this season celebrates its 75th anniversary, already consolidated in the highest category of Spanish soccer. In addition, it began to be a regular in European competitions.
Its boom came during the Pellegrini era, when the Yellow Submarine achieved:
– Third place in La Liga (04-05)
– Runner-up in La Liga (07-08)
– Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League (08-09).
However, on May 13, 2012, the Castellón club experienced the darkest moment in its history. Villarreal, against all odds, was relegated to the Second Division after losing a 0-1 match against Atlético de Madrid. Nowadays, they have recovered and last year they lived an unforgettable moment: reaching the Champions League semifinals.
Its women’s section
The women’s Villarreal became a reality in 2000. Their start was very complicated, but in the 20-21 season they were promoted for the first time to the top division of women’s soccer. In an autonomous community where Valencia and Levante received all the media attention, Villarreal’s matches had to be followed.
Apart from the first team, the women’s section has five other teams. Villarreal B and C and three grassroots teams: a cadet infantile A, a cadet infantile B and an alevín. The girls play their matches on pitch 5 of the Ciudad Deportiva del Villarreal.
Villarreal’s role in the tournament
The aim of the 1st Women’s Tournament against ALS organized by SIA Academy was to raise funds for research into a cure for this illness. Our organization thought of Villarreal because it is one of the most important clubs in the Valencian Community, and they accepted without hesitation.
The yellow submarine could not win any of their games and therefore was in last position. However, the result was the least important thing on this festive date. Thanks to their presence, the tournament became more attractive and the proceeds from the sale of club merchandise were boosted
Villarreal CF members
Villarreal has had a spectacular rise to the current Liga Santander. This is the first year that it can say that it has its men’s and women’s sections in the First Division, but before them there have been a large number of footballers who have contributed their bit.
No fan of the ‘groguet’ team forgets the era of Forlán, Riquelme or Pirés. In the women’s section, the first big-name signing was Olivia Oprea. The Romania international signed for Villarreal with the aim of moving up to the top flight, and so it was. Currently, these are the squads of both sections:
