Dribbling in football: Top 6 best exercises to improve

In football, dribbling is the ability to get past an opponent while keeping control of the ball, using quick movements, changes of direction, and visual feints. This technical skill not only allows players to progress on the field, but can also break defensive lines and create goal-scoring opportunities. Mastering dribbling is key for both attackers and creative midfielders, and in SIA Academy, it is considered a fundamental pillar in player development. As José Luis, one of the academy’s coaches, says: “A good dribble is not just about technique, it’s also about intelligence to decide when and how to do it.”

Below, we review the 6 best exercises to perfect this skill, just as they are practiced in professional training programs.

Table of contents

  • 1. Slalom with cones at different distances
  • 2. Dribbling in tight spaces with defensive pressure
  • 3. Change of pace with obstacles
  • 4. 1 vs 1 in confined areas
  • 5. Dribbling with visual and auditory stimuli
  • 6. Mixed dribbling and finishing circuit
  • Keys to maximize results

1. Slalom with cones at different distances

A classic that never fails. Cones are placed in a straight line at varying distances—some closer, some further apart—to force the player to adjust their ball control and touches.
At SIA Academy, this drill is combined with speed variations, simulating real match scenarios. The key is to keep the ball close to the dominant foot while using the non-dominant foot to balance the trajectory. José Luis points out: “When the player masters both short and long spaces with the ball, their confidence grows exponentially.”

In training sessions, dribbling is an element present in most exercises.

2. Dribbling in tight spaces with defensive pressure

Here, a small square is marked out (for example, 5×5 meters) and one or two defenders are placed to pressure the attacker, who must maintain possession for a set time.
This drill develops the ability to shield the ball, use the body to block the opponent, and perform quick turns. At SIA Academy, a timer is added to increase psychological pressure, simulating real situations where decision-making is just as important as technical execution.

3. Change of pace with obstacles

This exercise alternates short and long dribbling segments, with cones or other obstacles that force the player to slow down, speed up, and slow down again. This pattern mimics what happens in a match, where a player may go from a sprint to a feint in milliseconds.
SIA Academy recommends combining this exercise with short and long touches, training adaptability to game rhythm and improving explosiveness at the key moment of the dribble.

4. 1 vs 1 in confined areas

Nothing improves dribbling more than facing a real defender. In this drill, two players are placed in a small area, and the attacker must get past the rival to reach a small goal or designated line.
This training format boosts creativity, reading the opponent’s movements, and improvisation skills. In SIA Academy’s methodology, the mental aspect is also trained: knowing when to persist with the dribble and when to pass the ball.

5. Dribbling with visual and auditory stimuli

This innovative exercise consists of placing cones or colored markers that the coach calls out randomly, or using sound cues to indicate changes of direction.
At SIA Academy, this method trains peripheral awareness and coordination, essential elements for effective dribbling. The player learns to process information in fractions of a second, maintaining ball control and adapting to the environment.

Knowing how to use the body well will help maintain stability and protect the ball.

6. Mixed dribbling and finishing circuit

A format that combines the best of several drills: slalom, turns, changes of pace, and finally, a shot on goal. The idea is for the dribble to have a final objective, just like in a real match.
This circuit, commonly used at SIA Academy, not only improves technique but also integrates game vision and precision in passing or shooting after the dribble. In this way, the complete sequence of an attacking action is trained.

Keys to maximize results

Beyond the drills, there are principles that multiply progress:

  • Repetition and consistency: dribbling technique improves with frequent, well-planned sessions.
  • Using both feet: an unpredictable player can switch the ball between feet at any moment.
  • Eye control: not looking directly at the ball increases deception against the opponent.
  • Varying scenarios: training on different surfaces and under different defensive pressures.

At SIA Academy, training is designed so that each player finds their own dribbling style, enhancing strengths and correcting weaknesses.

ANUAL PROGRAMME

Dribbling is more than an aesthetic resource; it is a tactical tool that can decide matches. With the right exercises and the guidance of professionals like those at SIA Academy, any player can significantly improve their ability to get past rivals. As José Luis states: “The perfect dribble is the one that appears at the right moment.” And to achieve it, you need technique, game vision, and plenty of smart training.
