Get to know Levante in depth, winner of the 1st SIA Academy ALS Tournament
Do you think you know your team’s history? Are you a Levante fan and still not addicted to their women’s section? Today is the time to start. In this article you can learn about the club from its beginnings to the present day.
Columbus Day is also the day on which the first women’s tournament against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was held. This festive date brought together hundreds of attendees who enjoyed four matches played between these teams: Valencia, Villarreal, Levante and SIA Massanassa CF. The final was disputed between the teams from Valencia and the “granotas” and the result was 1-0 for the team from Orriols, winners of the tournament.
The history of Levante
Levante is the oldest Valencian club in history. Its foundation dates back to 1909, when the Granotas and Gimnástico Fútbol Club merged. In 1941, the team acquired the name Levante Unión Deportiva, which continues to define it today.
The women’s section of the club began in 1998, when they absorbed another existing team: San Vicente Valencia. In its short history, Levante Femenino has competed in the UEFA Champions League and is one of the rivals to be reckoned with in the First Division
The most memorable matches and results
In the men’s section, the best seasons were 12-13 and 13-14. In the first one, the team managed to be leader for one matchday and finished the year in European positions. The following year, they reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League, but were eventually eliminated by Rubin Kazan.
For their part, the women’s team had a spectacular hegemony from the 1999-00 season until 06-07. In those eight seasons they won the Copa de la Reina six times and won three league titles. In addition, they have played in the UEFA Champions League four times, the last time last season.
Their role in the 1st Women’s ALS Tournament
Levante did not hesitate to participate in the 1st Women’s Tournament against ALS organized by SIA Academy. The Valencian team is aware that a lot of funds are needed
to find a cure for this disease and its brand has been important to raise as much as possible in this charity tournament.
In addition, they won the title after defeating their main rival, Valencia, in the final by 1-0. In the women’s section, the Orriols team continues to be the rival to beat in the Valencian Community in most categories.
Levante at present
Right now the men’s section is not going through its best moment. The team was relegated last season to the Smartbank League and has not started off on the right foot with the goal of promotion. So much so that they have already decided to replace Nafti -former coach- and have signed Javi Calleja.
The opposite is true of Levante Femenino, who have made a sensational start to the campaign and are in second place with ten points from a possible twelve. The first slip-up of the year came in the last game played, where the result was 1-1 against Levante las Planas
